Welcome to Phoenix Retirement Coaching.

Retire from work, and not from life.

With the certainty of tides

Just like hopes springing high

Still Ill rise"

Why Retirement Coaching?

10,000 “boomers” retire every day in the UK. The over 65s population of England and Wales is around 11 million nearly 19% (Centre for Ageing Better 2022).

Whilst we look forward to leaving behind the demands and challenges of working life and enter a slower-paced, more leisurely phase, retirement for some of us can be frustrating and isolating.

"The Boomers biggest impact will be on eliminating the term 'retirement' and inventing a new stage in life - the new career arc"

-Rosabeth Moss-Kanter-

Hello, I'm Hilary

Qualified in management, coaching, teaching and training I had a busy, challenging and enjoyable career for over 40 years. I had been a self employed leadership development consultant for over 25 years when I decided to retire.....

Oh, the joy ! ….. not having to rise to the alarm and hit the increasingly congested motorways in all weathers….not having to fuss with heels and hair.

Taking time pottering in the garden, meeting friends for lunch, booking weekend breaks/trips away. I had done my sums and could look forward to a modest, comfortable retirement.

However, I soon found a disconnect between my expectations and the reality of no longer being in “active” work. Although it was a pleasure to holiday, socialise and catch up with friends and family, I found that I was lacking the focus and structure of my working life. I have always volunteered, and continue to do so, but even taking a part-time job in retail, I was lacking challenge and stimulation.

I experienced a sense of loss of identity, feeling devalued with little to offer. I quickly realised that whilst I had spent time pre-retirement developing appropriate financial plans, I had overlooked the mental/ emotional impact of not having structure and focus. I missed the social aspect of my working life and experienced a sense of aimlessness through lack of “purpose”

How can Retirement Coaching Help?

Did you know there is no word in Japanese for “retire”.

Instead the Japanese philosophy centres around Ikigai, which means “life purpose”.

Iki means life... gai describes value or worth.

For many of us our “Ikigai” is heavily invested in the work we do. When our 'active' working life chapter closes…what opens up for us for the next 20+ years? What does this new chapter “retirement”, hold for us?

This is a major life transition. It can be joyous and exciting. I can help you address your concerns and ease this transition by supporting you to:

  • Adapt to new routines with purpose
  • Reimagine goals and ambitions
  • Reshape identity to fit new lifestyle
  • Plan exciting new activities and experiences
  • Clarify new ways to measure success
